Why Is My Image File So Large?

You check a photo's size expecting a few hundred kilobytes and find it is four megabytes. A form wants it under fifty KB. How did it get so big, and what do you actually change to shrink it? Once you know the three things that decide a file's size, the answer is obvious every time.

Image files are large for understandable reasons, and none of them are mysterious once you see them laid out. Here is what is going on inside that heavy file.

The three things that make an image file big

Every image's size comes down to three factors working together:

  • How many pixels it contains (its dimensions).
  • What format it is saved in.
  • How much quality is kept, which is the same as how little it is compressed.

Make any of these bigger and the file grows. To shrink a file you reduce one or more of them, and knowing which to reach for is the whole skill.

Reason 1: too many pixels

This is the most common cause. A digital image is a grid of pixels, and modern cameras capture an enormous number of them. A 12-megapixel phone photo is roughly 4000 x 3000 pixels — that is twelve million tiny coloured squares, each of which takes space to store. A passport photo only needs about 413 x 531 pixels, a fraction of that. So a camera photo is carrying dozens of times more pixels than a form will ever use, and every one adds to the file size.

  • Windows: right-click, Properties, and check the Details tab.
